SHIPYARD PLANTATION HISTORYThe Shipyard Plantation has changed hands many times over the years, but it is one of only two plantations to retain its antebellum name. A bricklayer from Dublin, Ireland, named Henry Talbot-Talbird is the first recorded owner of the 1,765-acre property in the early 1700s. Because bricks were manufactured on the property, including those used in building the third Tybee Island Lighthouse, it came to be known as the “Brickyard Plantation.” After the Revolutionary War, the plantation was home to the Fickling family, who were shipbuilders. The estate then became known as the “Fickling Plantation” and the “Shipyard Plantation.”
